Creating Intentions and Goals in Style -- Steve Crossley

Positive. Creative. Driven. These are three words that describe Steve Crossley. And you can't help but be inspired to go after your own dream once you hear how he accomplished his. Sucess Stories - Steve Crossley Steve is the owner of Ashley Stevens Hair Massage Nails in Mechanicsburg, PA. Although he's only owned the salon for just two years, his background in the beauty industry, business and marketing spans 28 years. When asked why he does what he does, he smiles and says "I've just always enjoyed making women feel and look beautiful. Soft spoken, you are instantly put at ease with the mellifluous flow of his voice. And although he is a modest individual, you get the immediate sense that he knows what he wants and how to get it. Steve originally planned to purchase another salon where he had worked and managed for 9 years; however the deal fell through when the owner, who also happened to be a friend, made the decision to try to sell it to someone else for a much higher price than was originally agreed upon, without ever telling Steve. "It just wasn't a good situation all the way around. He had been my friend for nearly thirty years, and when this happened, the wind was taken out of my sails and the trust was gone."

While his trust may have been broken, Steve wasn't. "I'm definitely not into playing "the victim." Things happen, and I believe they happen for a reason. I've always been into spirituality, so I spent some quiet time thinking things through and deciding what plan B would be. I took some time to grieve the loss and feeling of betrayal, and then chose to reframe and redirect my energy into moving forward." Always very goal-oriented, Steve sat down with a "five goal plan." "I came up with my five goals and immediately felt a sense of drive to make them realities." And Steve's goals, while practical, would also require good business skills and proper planning. "First, my girlfriend Carol and I had become accustomed to a certain lifestyle, and I wanted to maintain our standard of living; second, I wanted to create a retirement fund for the both of us; third, I wanted to be able to support my son and daughter through high school and college; fourth, I wanted to be able to afford a nice 50th wedding anniversary gift for my parents; and fifth, I wanted to be able to one day indulge in my real passion, holistic medicine, which I had discovered the benefits of when I was 18."

Steve immediately got to work on turning his intentions into realities. "As soon as I was clear about my goals, ideas about hair salons were just flying at me. It was an intuitive sense and I couldn't ignore it." Steve read an ad in the newspaper from a business broker about a salon that was for sale in Mechanicsburg. Sucess Stories - Steve Crossley's Salon"The interesting thing was that I had looked at this salon one day while driving around. I got out and looked in the windows- it didn't look like much. And then I read the ad in the paper and it was for the same salon. I knew I had to act on it." Six weeks from the day Steve first confronted his boss at the former salon he settled on the new salon. "I meditate each day, follow my intuition and it's always guided me in the right direction. So I knew this was the right move." The salon Steve purchased was already a working salon with three employees, one of which was the previous owner, who asked Steve if she could stay on and work part-time. "I didn't have a lot of money to pour into the salon right away so we were operating with a skeleton crew and most of the old equipment."

While Steve's business was surviving, he wanted it to thrive. "I wanted my staff to really make the most of their talents, which really goes beyond cutting, coloring and styling hair, makeup application, manicures and pedicures. It's all about making your clients feel special and creating an atmosphere that makes people feel beautiful and want to sit down, exhale and briefly escape the stresses of the day. I knew just the person to call."

Steve and Sharon have been friends for years. "Sharon and I live with the same sense of purpose while approaching life slightly differently. I am impressed with her presentations and her ability to combine professionalism with spirituality. I know that in addition to being a motivator, she also has a very good business sense and I wanted to be able to tap into that side of her to get the best for and from my staff. Sharon proposed an ongoing relationship including some mini presentations and individual coaching sessions with each staff member. She began by sitting in during staff meetings. "You immediately feel Sharon's positive presence in the room and she offers energetic support. If I bring up a topic, and perhaps not everyone is in synch with it, Sharon has the ability to hold that energetic space while we harmonize. Sharon also offers me a unique perspective about the business beyond number crunching and the bottom line. She is a positive person who thinks in terms of possibilities." Steve also finds personal energy support from Sharon as well. "She spots things. On the whole I am a very positive person. However, I do have my moments. If I'm discouraged or overwhelmed or thinking the business isn't growing fast enough, she'll tell me "Steve, you didn't start this business on a balanced level. You purchased a failing business and had to build it up just to break even level first! Sharon helps put things in perspective during the times I doubt myself. I absolutely would not want to be without that. That is her gift."

When asked how he's progressing with his goals, Steve smiles with pride "I've accomplished four out of five! I have employed two more stylists and Ashley Stevens Salon has a fresh new look and feel and that's what we want to pass onto our clients.
